Karen Sherris and Debbie Bond’s latest cake and brac sale at King’s on 2 February 2011 has raised a fabulous £902 for KCH LRT.
The event had a difficult start, being postponed twice due to bad weather. But Karen, clerk to the trustees, and Debbie, limb reconstruction nurse, were determined to hold the event and with the help they received from many people, it proved to be very worthwhile.
Karen said: “We want to say special thanks to Laval Piarroux, a patient of Om Lahoti, Sheila Ashworth and Adrian Heathfield, who was waiting for a bed prior to his surgery with Graeme Groom the following day.”
Debbie managed the sale despite also working in a busy limb reconstruction clinic. Thanks are due to consultant Sarah Phillips and limb reconstruction physiotherapist, Helen Ridler, who baked for the stall on the day. The sale was supported by Mark Phillips, Graeme Groom, Om Lahoti and members of the Orthopaedic Department and King’s staff.
In addition to raising funds for the trust, the cake sale was also an opportunity for patients to meet and exchange information, and for Karen to promote this website which is another source of useful information for those undergoing limb reconstruction surgery.Adrian Heathfield, who has had more than his fair share of surgery, could compare notes with a new patient, Tom Linwood, who was involved in a car accident only two weeks previously.
Irma Phillips who works in Orthopaedic Admissions at King’s College Hospital regularly makes cakes for the sale. One of these was a prize in the raffle, and was won by Muriel Louge, one of Om Lahoti’s limb reconstruction patient. She is pictured below with her daughter who is a district nurse.
The other winners in the raffle were:
1st prize: Epson colour printer, scan and fax machine - Dr Ashwin Vasireddy
2nd prize: Bottle of premier champagne - Ms Anna Goulborn
3rd price: Iced cake - Mrs Muriel Louge
4th prize: Jewellery - Miss Beverley Deacon
5th prize: Cuddly toy - Master Ross Fletcher
